Crude's 9% Weekly Surge Meets a Crowded Long
MARKET OVERVIEW: WTI is up 9.51% on the week to $93.92 and Brent up 9.04% to $98.67, even as gasoline fell 4.72% on the day to $3.0628 — a split that rarely holds together. Crude's COT book has flipped to its most long-leaning positioning in three years (97.4th percentile), and our own model puts 70% odds WTI falls to $89.52 by September 11. The rest of the tape stayed calm — VIX at 15, HY spreads at 265bp, macro stress at 2.7 (Low) — so the energy move isn't being confirmed elsewhere.
TL;DR — the read in bullets
- The regime read is pre-vote risk-on, carrying 78% of weighted votes: VIX at 15 is calm, the 2s10s curve at +0.41 is normal, OFR FSI at -2.73 is benign, and HY OAS at 265bp is tight. ...
- Funding conditions are unremarkable: SOFR-EFFR is +3bp, the Treasury General Account sits at $944bn, down $17bn over four weeks, and OFR FSI remains benign at -2.73. The 2s10s curve at +0.41 ...
- Yen positioning is at an extreme: JPY net shorts sit at the 9th percentile of the past three years — the most short-leaning stretch in that window — at net -111,297 contracts, down a ...
- WTI rose 2.67% on the day and 9.51% on the week to $93.92; Brent gained 2.48% and 9.04% to $98.67. Gasoline moved the opposite way, down 4.72% on the day and 10.89% on the week to ...
MACRO
The regime read is pre-vote risk-on, carrying 78% of weighted votes: VIX at 15 is calm, the 2s10s curve at +0.41 is normal, OFR FSI at -2.73 is benign, and HY OAS at 265bp is tight. Composite macro stress sits at 2.7, in Low territory.
A convergence flag fired across three independent categories today — physical, positioning, and volatility — which is cross-sensor agreement rather than single-source noise. The inputs: three-year COT extremes in crude, nat gas, and JPY; a gold VRP inversion (realized vol above implied); a gasoline stock extreme (US total stocks -173% of the 5-year band); and copper backwardation running 20 of 20 sessions at +92 $/t.
