VIX at 15, but Crude, Gas and Copper Positioning Sit at Three-Year Extremes
MARKET OVERVIEW: The regime read is risk_on (78% of weighted votes) with VIX at 15, 2s10s at +0.41 and HY OAS at 265bp, and the macro stress gauge sits at 1.7, Low. Underneath that calm tape, three independent categories are flashing extremes at once: WTI net-short positioning at the 97.4th percentile in three years, nat gas net-short at the 100th percentile, and copper backwardation running 20 of 20 sessions. Add an inverted gold vol premium (implied 26.6 vs realized 27.5) and Hormuz transits down 14.3% week over week, and the setup is a low-stress tape sitting on top of stressed positioning and physical signals.
TL;DR — the read in bullets
- The regime read heading into the week is pre-vote risk_on, carrying 78% of weighted votes: VIX at 15 (calm), 2s10s at +0.41 (normal), OFR FSI at -2.73 (benign), HY OAS at 265bp (tight). ...
- 2s10s sits at +0.41, read as normal within the regime model. Funding conditions are steady: SOFR-EFFR at +3bp, TGA at $944bn (down $17bn over four weeks), and OFR FSI at -2.77.
- JPY positioning is the standout: net short and the most short-leaning reading in three years (9.0th percentile), at net -111,297 and down a further -29,678 week over week — a crowded ...
- WTI crude COT positioning is net short but sits at the 97.4th percentile over three years — the most long-leaning reading in that window — at net -725, up 770 week over week. Nat gas (HH) ...
MACRO

The regime read heading into the week is pre-vote risk_on, carrying 78% of weighted votes: VIX at 15 (calm), 2s10s at +0.41 (normal), OFR FSI at -2.73 (benign), HY OAS at 265bp (tight). The macro stress index reads 1.7, classified Low.
A convergence signal fired today across three independent categories — physical, positioning, and volatility — which the system flags as cross-sensor agreement rather than single-source noise: COT extremes at 3-year highs in WTI crude, HH nat gas and JPY; a VRP inversion in gold (realized vol above implied); an energy stock extreme (US total gasoline stocks at -173% of the 5-year band); and copper backwardation for 20 of 20 sessions at +6 $/t.
On the tape, the Nikkei 225 added 2.12% on the day (+0.13% on the week) to 66399.84. Quiet on the calendar until the next high-impact print: PPI MoM on 2026-09-10 at 08:30 ET (expected 0.4%, prior 0%).
