Payrolls Triple Estimates, Stress Model Says Not So Fast
Nonfarm payrolls printed 162K against a 56K consensus and ISM Services accelerated to 55.4, the strongest of the cycle so far. Yet our regime model flipped out of risk-on and the macro stress composite jumped from -31 to 12 the same day — a split between what the labor market is saying and what the internals are saying.
TL;DR — the read in bullets
- Nonfarm payrolls came in at 162K, nearly three times the 56K consensus estimate and well above the prior month's 21K. ISM Services PMI printed 55.4, above the 54.3 expected and up from 54.1 ...
- One widely-read blog notes that Fed governor Waller argued for patience, citing "signs of disinflation" and saying he would be inclined to support holding the federal funds rate at ...
- Despite the data beats, the regime model flipped out of risk-on to a neutral read ahead of its next scheduled vote, and the macro stress composite moved from -31 to 12 — a swing large ...
- Shipping data show broad chokepoint disruption: Strait of Hormuz transits fell 14.3% week-over-week, Bab el-Mandeb transits fell 10.7%, and Taiwan Strait transits fell 12.4%. Panama ...
Labor Market Blows Through Consensus
Nonfarm payrolls came in at 162K, nearly three times the 56K consensus estimate and well above the prior month's 21K. ISM Services PMI printed 55.4, above the 54.3 expected and up from 54.1 prior — an acceleration, not a plateau. The unemployment rate held at 4.1%, matching both the prior reading and expectations exactly.
The combination argues against the slowdown narrative that has dominated recent commentary. A payrolls beat of this size, paired with services expansion picking up rather than stalling, is the kind of print that typically pushes back against near-term rate-cut pricing.
